Teddy Bear Hospital is something new and exciting for Durham University Medical School, although the concept is being developed by Medical students around the country for key stage one pupils in their local area. The idea is to get younger children involved in hospital scenarios to reduce fears of doctors and procedures involved in Medicine. Last year we went into a number of schools and let them be doctors to their teddies so they could get used to doctors and hospitals.

In our typical session you should expect a brief introduction to the various stations before the children are separated into groups of around 5. The children and their teddies then visit each station for 10 minutes at a time, meeting two students at each. The children are taught about a number of topics, from X-rays to hand washing, dental health to stethoscopes and healthy eating to the heart. After the stations have been visited by every group there is a simple verbal feedback session asking the children what they enjoyed the most and what they've learnt about going to the Doctors. Each session is extremely interactive and both the children and the students get a lot from them.
