Launch of Mission Christmas

What did you ask Santa for this Christmas?

1 in three children in Teesside live in poverty and won’t get a Christmas.

Durham Paediatrics Society are asking you to buy one extra present this year- a gift to give to disadvantaged children to make their Christmas morning.

We need gifts and shoeboxes for children aged 0-18 years. If you’d prefer to give cash instead that’s great too! If you would like to get involved don't hesitate to get in touch! We would love your support.

Birth of the Paediatric Society!

After much discussion with Newcastle Paediatrics we have decided to launch a sister society here at Queens Campus.

This is a super exciting time for us and everyone is going to work hard to make this a massive success!

The New exec have been elected and the results are as follows-

  • President- Jonny Humby

  • Chairman- Liam Arnot

  • Secretary- Iona Cutforth

  • Treasurer- Julian Laverty

  • Newcastle Rep- Matty Hughes

  • Promotions Officer- Lauren Dickinson

  • Fundraising and Charities- Jonny Russ

  • Teddy Bear- Kathy Bell

We are all super excited to get Durham Paediatrics Society off to a flying start :)

Love xxx

October 2013

We chose to run a Cake Sale in order to raise some money for three children's charities and to also raise awareness of the society to other students on Campus and gaige interest.

The sale went amazing with the campus raising £210.40. Thank you to everyone who bought, donated and baked cakes. Your hard work and kindness will give three charities some much needed money.

The three charities we supported in the Bake Sale were Butterwick Hospice, Teenage Cancer Trust and Zoe's Place.

Thanks Again everyone and good job!!! x

MedSoc's Got Talent

We had another fabulous fundraiser at MedSoc's Got Talent! All of the popcorn and brownies went in the end and we managed to raise £51 !!

Again, our huge thanks to everyone who contributed either by making brownies or buying the treats :)

Teddy Bear Hospital

We've now had a lot of successful sessions, with positive feedback from the all the teachers and children. Recently, we've managed to get the pharmacy students integrated with a fabulous first session at Breckon Hill. We've also been back to Redhouse School in Norton, and tried out a double-sized session with some extra stations about asthma, bones, and food digestion.

After a massively successfull talk last year (Children Born with Half a Heart), Dr Michael Griksaitis was very kind to come back and speak to us again, this time regarding the journey into Paediatrics, and the various pathways which your career could follow. After a little break we then went through some Paediatric trauma cases, in particular Paediatric hangings.

It was an incredibly interesting session with a brilliant turn out, we hope you all enjoyed teh evening and it was an indication of all the brilliant talks to follow next year!

Finally, our thanks go to Michael for taking an evening out to come and speak to us again.

NUPS Conference

The 28th February saw a small group of us travelling up to Newcastle University for their 3rd annual Paediatrics Conference. This was the second year we have attended and it was very informative about what we can do to get into a  career in Paediatrics.

The talks included:

 - An intro to Paeds

 - Training Pathways

 - Audits

 - Speciality Talks (A+E, cardiothoracic, neuro...)

 - Communication Skills

 - Ethics

After a very quiet January (we felt it was wise to stop annoying you all with notifications after the craziness of Mission Christmas!) PaedSoc were back in force in February - we've had more Teddy Bear Hospital sessions, (doing our first ever double-sized workshop with 60 kids!), as well as taking a bus to the Newcastle University Paediatrics Conference, a fundraiser at MedSoc's Got Talent, and hosting our first talk of the year.

We also held our first talk of this year - 'Children's Palliative Care: what does this involve and what role does Zoë's Place Baby Hospice in Middlesbrough have?' by Zoe's Place, (exploring the demand, delivery and development of paediatric palliative care focusing on the under 5’s). We would like to thank everyone that came along and thank Zoe's place for coming and doing a talk for us.

Fundraising this term has included a cake sale (raising £78.37), Medsoc's got Talent refreshments (raising 43.40) and a raffle making the overall total for this year £818.45!! We would like to thank everyone that has been involved with Paedsoc this year helping us to achieve this! With mission christmas this means we have an excellent £247.93 to donate to each charity (The Children's Society and Eastern Ravens).

Talks that have gone on this term include:

- Neonatal Care by Dr Mithiesh
